History
Gymnastics have been contested at every Olympic Games since the first Modern Olympiad in 1896. It is a sport that was inspired by the feats of strength, flexibility, balance, and dexterity that were featured in the Original Olympics of Ancient Greece. It was an all Male competition until 1928 when Women were allowed to compete, however both genders competitions have taken drastically different courses as they grew into the modern day event. The Women's event is focused on the balance, poise, and grace of the young ladies competing and features events such as the Balance Beam and Uneven Bars. On the other hand the Men's event is focused on the strength, agility, and flexibility of the Men competing and features events such as the Pommel Horse, Still Rings, High Bar, and Parallel Bars. Both the Men and the Women compete in the Floor Exercise and on the Vault.
The Olympics Gymnastics competition is made up of two different competitions, the Individual Event competition and the All-Around competition. The All-Around is further split into the Individual All-Around and the Team All-Around. Everything begins with the Team All-Around in which athletes compete for the best scores and the team with the most points wins. The top Individual scorers (regardless of team) in the overall standings after the Team All-Around then compete in the Individual All-Around where the person with the highest score after all the events are competed again, wins. Finally, the top performers in each event during the Team All-Around compete in that Individual Event and the top scorer, again, wins the Gold Medal.
