Government
At the time of the 1896 Olympic Games Greece, and Athens, was experiencing a great amount of political unrest and upheaval that had been going on since the Greek Revolution in 1822. The official title of the Head of State has been Prime Minister since 1843 but the position was more similar to what would be considered a King than a Prime Minister today. In 1896, the Prime Minister was Theodoros Deligiannas of the Nationalist party but his reign would only last until 1897 before he was usurped by another. The Greek government, to this day, has still not stabilized itself and, as a result, Greece continues to be a country that is always teetering on the edge of economic, political, or social disaster.
