Olympic Torch Run
The Olympic Torch Relay is the event that kicks off the Olympic Games every four years. It is lit in a traditional ceremony at the original Olympic Stadium in Greece in which a flame is ignited by the sun, representing the Greek God Appollo, and the first torch is lit from that flame. The flame then completes a short circuit around Greece before heading off to do a much longer tour of Olympic Game's host country.
The tour through the host country is done by the people of the country itself. These torchbearers carry the flame throughout the country, running through their own neighborhoods and towns while millions of people line the roadways to watch the progression pass by. This not only allows the host country to highlight their various regions and diverse citizens, but it also gets people excited about the upcoming games and inspires them to watch, support, and attend the event when it finally occurs.
The Torch Run is capped off at the Opening Ceremonies of the games where famous citizens of the host country, generally retired athletes, are the final torch bearers and the cauldron at the top of the stadium is elaborately and ceremoniously lit to kick off the proceedings. It will stay lit until the Closing Ceremonies are completed and the Olympic Games are over.
This year the Olympic Flames is being carried by 8000 different people through 1000 different cities and towns across Great Britain including cities in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England. All of the torch bearers will carry the flame using a torch like the one pictured.
